It is estimated that over 5.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s. From this group 5.3 million individuals are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. This relentless incurable disease affects, memory, behavior and thinking. In the wake of this horrible disease there exist multiple alterations in the individuals mood and ability to conduct activities of daily living. Many individuals experience fear, frustration, anger, and sadness. Those who are caregivers speak of how they begin to see their loved one fade away from them. Their eyes become sad and sometimes empty, their confusion rises, and communication changes forever.
Mariana Newman has been a therapeutic recreation specialist for over 32 years.
In the last five years she has created something quite unique for others. She has combined her training as a therapist and her joy as a professional award winning photographer to complete the picture slideshow DVD, “Every Moment I Will Hold You.” This wonderful DVD can be used to awaken the brain, the memory, and the senses. As a direct result of her work, she is now the Director and Founder of Journeyscape Design.
A therapeutic recreation specialist treats an individual based on his/her strengths while they are experiencing a challenge, disorder or disease. “We commit to understanding each patient holistically and we encourage and support the individual to reach certain goals and objectives. We have studied how the body functions and we understand what challenges are present when the body is hurt or challenged.”
